The Department of Business Management is one of the three departments that form the GIMPA Business School. The others are the Management Science and Accounting and Finance departments. The Department of Business Management was established as part of the departmentalization agenda in 2021 and it is the largest of the three departments of the Business School in terms of the number of faculty.


The Department of Business Management has a mission to provide our students with exquisite managerial and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills that enhance their employability and new venture creation. This mission is pursued with internationally experienced and exposed faculty using current cutting-edge case study pedagogy, blended learning and technology-mediated courses which simulated industry, markets and organizational decision-making in our lectures.

The Business Management Department is one of the departments in the Business School, to provide students with memorable managerial and entrepreneurial experiences needed for both employability and new venture creation. The Department offers a wide range of relevant courses in both diploma in Management Studies and Marketing and Human Resource Management courses at the undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. levels.

These courses are provided by academic staff known for their academic, research, and professional experiences in Marketing, Human Resources, and Entrepreneurship. Together with industries, professional bodies, and emerging trends on the market, the courses are developed to produce knowledge and skillful graduates ready to external academics to produce ethically sound graduates with the knowledge and skills required to assume business managerial positions, in an increasingly competitive international dynamic business marketplace.

During your stay with the Department as a student, you will be provided with global business education made up of lectures business simulations, and case studies as well as being exposed to captains of industries with our Practioner’s Forum and guest speakers’ series. These enable students to have a practical view of theories learned in class. As students study hard and take advantage of the rich and memorable activities that the GIMPA, offers by academic staff and support from friendly and professional administrative staff, they have a gateway to succeeding in an increasingly competitive local and international marketplace as you make lifelong friends and mentors. The Department of Business Management has a mission to provide our students with exquisite managerial and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills that enhance their employability and new venture creation. This is sustained with strategic and operational decisions with core thrusts of Excellence, Quality, Standardization and Technology, applied in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Our programme offering covers both undergraduate and postgraduate levels (BSc, MBA, MRes & PhD) in Business Administration, Marketing, and Human Resource Management.
From the 2023/2024 academic year, our main undergraduate admissions will be for the new BSc (Hons) Business Administration. However, admissions will be opened for students with HND in specialized areas to join as top-up students in years 200 and 300 for the BSc (Hons) Marketing and Human Resources.
The diverse excellent and experienced faculty of the department have built a range of portfolio for relevant cutting-edge research intended to contribute to the body of knowledge in Ghana and globally. BSc. (Hons) Business Administration

Our Bachelor of Science in Business Administration programme is designed for students seeking a broad-based high level of business knowledge emanating from an in-depth understanding of business concepts and entrepreneurship mindset content required to run businesses in the contemporary business environment. Therefore, students will acquire the skills needed to integrate management, marketing, accounting, and finance concepts to develop strategies to improve short, medium, and long-term organizational goals and performance. As a general business degree, it is intended for students who want to study business. In addition, this broad-based business management qualification is to appeal to people running their businesses, those with the intention of running their own businesses and those working in entrepreneurial environments seeking higher knowledge of contemporary solutions.

BSc. (Hons) Human Resource Management

The human capital of organisations has become a critical source of competitive advantage and as such it prudent management is an important requirement in management education. Our Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management programme, therefore seeks to equip students with thorough theoretical and practical global and local context perspectives and understanding of key areas in human resource management. This is to prepare students for contemporary human resource management and managerial career in industry or the public sector.

Marketing and its management are now an integral part of making an organisation succeed in the current contemporary business environment. Our Bachelor of Science in Marketing programme provides a concentration of marketing knowledge within a broad base of business and entrepreneurship concepts for our students. Providing insights into the marketing process and the cutting-edge marketing techniques essential to marketers and marketing managers of products and services in the contemporary business environment. Graduate (PhD)Programmes

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration (Modular)

The GIMPA PhD programme is designed to enrich students’ research skills toward facilitating their ability to conduct rigorous academic research with implications for Ghana’s and international development. The PhD programme model focuses on three basic areas:

  • Rigorous training in general research methods as well as those specific to a discipline. This ensures the ability to conduct research at an advanced level. Such training is typically covered in two semesters of coursework and also throughout the programme in substantive seminars and workshops.
  • Substantive coursework in a subject area discipline beyond the master’s degree level. This is designed to ensure theoretical, applied and empirical knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline. Such coursework is typically covered in one semester.
  • A supervised written thesis that typically takes up to two years to complete.
The areas of specialization in the Department are:
  • Management (HRM/Strategy)
  • Marketing

Admission Requirements:

Admission into the Doctoral Programme is once a year only. The deadline for completed applications is August 31. Applications must include all supporting documents before they can be considered for review. Applications completed after the deadline will be deferred for consideration to the next admission cycle. Minimum Criteria for Admission
● A GIMPA Master of Science or Master of Research Degree in Business Administration or its equivalent from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 3.3 or higher or equivalent as determined by the admission committee.
● Applicants possessing a good Masters’s degree with a GPA of 3.3 or higher (or equivalent) from other accredited universities shall be considered for admission
● Applicants with a first-class honours degree in a relevant area at the Bachelor’s level from an accredited reputable university.
● Two completed recommendation forms from people who are qualified to comment on the applicant’s academic preparation and potential for success in the Doctoral Program. At least one must be from a former lecturer.
(i) An essay on professional plans and what role the doctorate will play in attaining them.
(ii) A document outlining potential areas of
dissertation research
(iii) An interview with the admissions committee may be required.

Doctor of Management (DMGT)

The GIMPA Doctor of Management (DMGT) programme is designed for professional and senior executives with extensive managerial experience who are looking to acquire knowledge that will enable them to transform business practices. It aims at developing scholar-practitioners with superior research and analytical skills that can be applied to critical issues in the world of business. The emphasis is on applied theory and research. As a result, the programme is designed around action research. Thus, the research approach emphasizes topics that reflect the intersection of theory and contemporary business issues.

Admission Requirements:
● Master's Degree in any discipline
● 5 years post master's degree senior management experience (i.e. typically at General
Manager, Head of Department/Division, Director, or CEO/MD level)
● Application Essay indicating the area of management practice the applicant is interested in as a focus and rationale for pursuing a DMGT.
● 2 letters of reference (minimum of 1 from an employment supervisor)
● Submission of a detailed current CV indicating educational qualifications and employment experience.
● An application interview is mandatory to verify professional
experience and suitability for the programme
● Need for Proposal and Interview.

ONE YEAR MASTER PROGRAMMES (Weekends)

Master of Human Resource Management

The Master of Human Resource Management is a one-year, full-time master’s degree programme designed to prepare professionals to advance their careers in the field of human resources (HR). The programme emphasizes the strategic role that human resources play in the performance of global and local organizations, providing students and practitioners with the knowledge and skills needed to be effective HR leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset. Our students learn key HR processes and activities by exploring key topics that are increasingly important to HR, including managing in a global contemporary context, diversity and inclusion, and managing HR in small and entrepreneurial firms.

Admission Requirements:

An applicant to the Master of Human Resource Management programme is required to have earned a bachelor's degree or the equivalent as follows:

  • The applicant must have a good first degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division minimum OR
  • Applicants with degree classifications lower than 2nd Class Lower must take the GIMPA Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Business Administration (CBA/DBA) programmes at the Business School and obtain pass marks of at least 55% in each course.
  • Applicants without HRM or management degrees or training should have practical experience of at least one year in a recognised organisation or firm.

Master of Marketing

The Master of Marketing is a one-year programme tailored to contribute positively to developing critical marketing management skilled personnel needed to fill more senior roles within various organisations. The programme provides our students with an entrepreneurial mind-set for the contemporary business environment, particularly at upper levels of corporate marketing management. The programme equips the student with the requisite knowledge and understanding of the principles and theories underlying effective marketing practice and provides them with leading-edge contemporary marketing skills for successful employment in both public and private organizations. The programme is geared towards graduates with little to moderate professional working experience after their bachelor’s degrees or professional certificates.

Programme Highlights:
Digital and Interactive Marketing, Consumer Behaviour, Integrated Marketing Communication, Services and Relationship Marketing, Sales Management, Brand Management and Corporate Identity, and Business-to-Business Marketing, among others.
Admission requirements:
An applicant to the Master of Marketing programme is required to have earned a bachelor's degree or the equivalent as follows:

  • The applicant must have a good first degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division minimum OR
  • The applicant must hold a professional qualification in Marketing such as CIM. OR
  • Applicants with degree classifications lower than 2nd Class Lower must take the GIMPA Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Business Administration (CBA/DBA) programmes at the Business School and obtain pass marks of at least 55% in each course.

TWO YEARS MASTER PROGRAMMES (Weekends, Evenings, and Modular)

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The GIMPA Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is a professional degree. The MBA programme is designed to provide a strong and advanced education in business management and also to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary for the attainment of a competitive edge in Business Administration. The programme is geared towards graduates with little to moderate professional working experience after their bachelor’s degrees or professional certificates. The focus is on developing managers with decision-making abilities. As such, there is much more emphasis on using case studies and other problem-solving tools. Unlike the EMBA, this programme allows for in-depth specializations as most entry-to middle-level managers focus on a functional area in terms of their employment responsibilities.

Admission Requirements: An applicant to the Master of Business Administration programme is required to have earned a bachelor's degree or the equivalent as follows:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an approved/recognized university with a second-class lower division minimum, plus two years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • A lower-class degree, then five years post-graduation professional experience plus additional postgraduate or professional certificate/education such as the GIMPA postgraduate or certificate in business administration. OR
  • Professional qualifications such as ACCA, ICA, ICSA, GIPS, and CIB, plus three years of post-qualification experience.
  • Applicants with degree classifications below second-class lower division and/or narrowly-focused professional qualifications should enrol in the GIMPA Diploma in Business Administration (DBA) programme at the Business School to enhance their chances of gaining admission.

Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) (Evening & Modular)

The GIMPA EMBA is a professional degree that is specially designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, attitude and skills required by chief executives and other top-level managers to meet effectively the leadership and managerial challenges they face in their organizations. As such, the programme adopts a generalist perspective that is relevant to those at senior management ranks and does not provide for specialization in any functional area of business.

Programme Highlights: Managing Information Systems, Operations and Project Management, Managerial Accounting & Control, among others. Admission requirements: An applicant to the Executive Master of Business Administration programme is required to have earned a bachelor's degree or the equivalent as follows:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree (from an approved/recognized university or equivalent professional qualification with requisite experience).
  • At least five years’ post-qualification managerial experience
  • Applicant should be at least thirty (30) years of age
  • Applicants with degree classifications below second-class lower division and or narrowly focused professional qualifications should enrol in the GIMPA Diploma in Business Administration (DBA) programme at the Business School to enhance their chances of gaining admission.

Master of Research in Business Administration (MRES)

The Master of Research in Business Administration (MRes) is a research-based degree that prepares graduates for academic careers in various functional areas of business at tertiary institutions and in the research departments of organizations. The programme emphasizes the development of skills in understanding theory, the research process and methodology. Graduates of the program are expected to make contributions to the advancement of knowledge of business practices through research, teaching and consulting. It is also designed for those interested in acquiring a doctoral degree in the future.

The areas of specialization in the Department of Business Management are:
  • Management (HRM/Strategy)

Admission Requirements:
  • Strong quantitative orientation/background.
  • Second class upper minimum for graduates in business, economics and other social sciences.
  • Second class lower minimum for graduates in mathematics, statistics and engineering-related sciences.
  • For the programme in accounting, a terminal professional qualification would be an added advantage.
  • Expressed interest in teaching at the tertiary level.
  • Sponsorship by a tertiary institution will be an added advantage.
