Objectives And Functions Of The Institute

Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration Act 676, 2004, sets up the Institute in its present form and sets out the following objectives:

a)         Train public servants of Ghana and to provide education, training and services in the fields of leadership, management and public administration for the public sector, private sector and non-governmental organizations.               

b)         Promote education, training and services in the fields of leadership, business management and administration;

c)         Provide professional, unbiased and dedicated advisory support services to various areas of Government to enhance their capacity for sustainable development;

(d)       Promote the development of managerial skills for the persons employed in the public and private sectors and non-governmental organizations and creates awareness of the need for education, training and the provision of services in the fields of leadership, management and administration as a necessary requirement for maintaining the vitality of organizations in the development of the economy;

(e)        Promote the use of information technology as GIMPA essential tool to    increase competitive advantage, and enhance output for national development;

(f)        Assists Ghanaian enterprises through cost effective education, training and the provision of services, research and consultancy to achieve efficient management, increase productivity and effective cost control;

(g)        Promotes understanding and co-operation between public and private sector institutions in respect of public administration and management obligations; and

(h)        Offers courses leading to the award of certificates, diplomas and degree in    the institute's area of competence subject to such conditions as the authorities responsible for tertiary education in the country shall direct.

STATUTES

 

The Statutes of the Institute provide the framework for carrying out the operations that have been prescribed by the Act establishing the Institute.

GOVERNANCE

The governing body of the Institute is the “Council”. The Council consists of

  1. Chairperson;
  2. Chairperson of the Public Services Commission;
  3. Head of the Civil Service;
  4. Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education;
  5. Executive Chairman of State Enterprises Commission;
  6. Rector of the Institute;
  7. One person representing each of the following:
  8. Association of Ghana Industries;
  9. Alumni Association of the Institute;
  10. One senior member of staff of the Institute;
  11. Two other persons, one of whom is a woman.

B.        EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT BOARD

It is the highest management decision-making body of the Institute. It consists of the Rector, the Deputy Rector and all Heads of Schools, Faculty, Departments, and Units.

C.        ACADEMIC BOARD

The Academic Board is the body that approves all academic work, which includes accreditation, admissions, examinations, award of academic certificates, diplomas, degrees, honorary degrees, and all academic ceremonies.

The Board consist of;

  1. Rector who shall be the chairperson;
  2. Heads of academic divisions and departments of the Institute;
  3. Two other persons representing the academic, professional and administrative staff of the Institute as may be prescribed in the statutes of the Institute; and
  4. All Professors of the Institute
