GIMPA Hosts 2017 TEN Ghana Elevator Pitch Contest

The first edition of the TEN Ghana Elevator Pitch Contest came off at the GIMPA law school moot court auditorium on Friday 23rd June, 2017. As the premier edition, it received over 150 applications from young entrepreneurs. Out of that number, only 10 shortlisted applicants sailed through to pitch their business ideas to a 7-member jury made up of successful entrepreneurs and investors.

TEN GHANA, in partnership with GIMPA Business School and Joy Business, brought together a team of investors and business startups under one roof to sell their ideas to these investors and the wider audience.

The chairperson for the event was Ms. Afua Asabea Asare , special advisor to the Minister of Business Development. Assisting her was Mr. John Kumah Esq., CEO of the Youth Enterprises Support (YES).

Ms. Ivy Barley, an MSc. Statistical Mathematics student of KNUST came out on top winning the $7,500 entrepreneurial technical support package. She competed with 9 other contestants and emerged the winner with her pitch titled “Women in Vogue”. Her idea is a social entrepreneurship programme to increase the number of women, especially those coming from underprivileged background in the technology Industry by teaching coding and basic computer programming.

The concept of the Elevator Pitch Contest is derived from the idea of a chance encounter between an aspiring entrepreneur and a potential investor in an elevator or a similar environment with only a limited period for the aspiring entrepreneur to pitch his/her business idea to the potential investor to whip up his interest to score another opportunity for further discussion or even for a startup support.

The Jury included; Prof Samuel Bonsu (Ag. Dean GIMPA Business School), Mr. Kaaka Dello-Ziem (CEO DIKPE Estate & Lawyer), Hon. Daniel Aboagye (MP Bantama Constituency & Financial Expert), Ms Franka Andoh (CEO Cuppa Cappuccino), Dr. Gordon Kwesi Adomdza (Professor of Entrepreneurship, Ashesi University), Dr. Mrs. Linda Vanotoo (Gt. Accra Director Ghana Health Service), Mr. Nabil Kheraz-Hadria (Country Director Dow Chemist).

One of our guest speakers Mr Francis Obirikorang (CEO AgroCenta) shared his experiences on running a startup in Ghana, sourcing for funding and on how to survive in the marketplace.

TEN GHANA and its partner GIMPA Business School intends to make the Elevator Pitch Contest an annual event to introduce opportunities to bright young people with business ideas to interact with potential investors.
