The Academy of Leadership and Executive Training (ALET), GIMPA this week took members of the governing council of the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) through training on corporate governance.

The two-day workshop held in Accra was to equip members on their role and responsibilities towards the University.

Some of the areas tackled were: understanding the strategic roles of the University Council and its committees, effective administration, leading and managing Universities, ensuring financial sustainability of the University and code of ethics amongst many others.

Mr. Justice Awuku Sao, Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Directors, who took the members through the training stressed the importance of the topic saying ‘It is important to educate the council members because government appointees more often than not are just  told to serve on boards without any clear-cut direction.’

This, he said, often led to some appointees not knowing what to do thus, making them seem incompetent.

Mr. Sao noted that there was the need for higher institutions, particularly, Universities to be led by very efficient council to enable them direct the affairs of the University.

He again stressed the need for the council to promote income-generating activities, control the finances and also ensure the conservation of resources of the University, especially in the area of expenditure.

In his remarks, the Director of ALET, Dr. Charles Amoatey stated that GIMPA, being a Centre of excellence, believed in good governance as a critical tool in achieving success.

For him, most of the challenges organizations faced were mostly due to a lack of good governance practices within the organization.

He was optimistic that the training will go a long way in providing the relevant skills that will enable the members work effectively.

‘This is the maiden edition, we have plans of taking this programme to both the traditional, private and other organizations so that we can achieve best results.’

The Vice Chancellor of SDD-UBIDS, Prof. Philip Duku Osei, applauded GIMPA for engaging the council members on good governance.

‘This University is very new, the training will go a long way in equipping members in the task given them,’ he said.

Prof. Osei further stated that the vision of SDD-UBIDS was to be an internationally acclaimed University that applies evidence from research and knowledge gained to solve the problems of business, national development, agencies and non-state actors towards improved development outcomes.
