The Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, Mr. Serge Baron Brammertz is currently in the country on a week’s working visit.
The visit among other things to strengthen the relationship between his office and Africa.
He came with his team of experts to train 25 state prosecutors from all the 16 regions of Ghana on prosecuting international crimes, sexual violence crimes and terrorism.
As part of the visit, he was invited by the Institute to speak at a seminar organized by GIMPA in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, KAS on Thursday, August 25, 2022.
The event which was on the theme: ‘Diplomacy and Prosecuting International Crimes’ was held at the GIMPA Executive Conference Centre (GECC), Greenhill.
The seminar brought together officials from all the security agencies in the country, some graduate students and other relevant stakeholders.
The seminar sought to create a platform for Mr. Brammertz to interact with the participants on the issue of diplomacy and international relations since these two topics had an aspect of security and prosecution of international crimes in them.
The focus of the discussion was also to see how best perpetrators of transnational crimes and human rights abuse crimes could be prosecuted effectively without hindrances from the countries involved.
Mr. Brammertz has already had discussions with the Chief Justice and Special Prosecutor of Ghana and will also be given an opportunity to meet the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before he leaves.
The Rector of GIMPA, Prof. Samuel Kwaku Bonsu who gave the welcome address at the event expressed his appreciation to Mr. Brammertz and his team for this laudable initiative.
He was optimistic that the training would go a long way to enhance the work of prosecutors in Ghana generally.
Dr. Arne Wulff, the Country Representative of KAS also lauded Mr. Brammertz and his team adding that it was indeed a step in the right direction.
GIMPA is the only Institution that Mr. Brammertz has so far visited in West Africa.
