The GIMPA Counselling Centre (GCC), in collaboration with the GIMPA clinic, on November 30th this year organized a Wellness Fair for Students of the Institute.
It entailed activities such as a counselling session, health check and a dip and keep, which included; a night’s stay at African Regent Hotel, T shirts and art session.
The students were taken through a health screening session that included checking of their body mass index, sugar level, height and weight. They also underwent a stress management session on how to manage stress in relation to their academic pattern.
In an interview with the Dean of Students, Dr. Augustina Akonnor, she said the event was introduced in 2019 to foster healthy choices for students.
‘As the Dean of Students, I am not only concerned about the academic performance of students but also their wellbeing because good health constitutes good living,’ she stressed.
She further expressed hopes of collaborating with other tertiary institutions in future although barriers such as appropriate venue, funding and coordinating may pose a challenge.
On his part, Dr. Daniel Nortey expressed his gratitude to the students for partaking in the event and said the Counselling Centre and the Clinic were happy to be co-hosts of the event.
‘I have encountered a lot of students who are being referred to the clinic for mental health issues. Thus, it is refreshing to have this programme to create awareness on mental health and other health issues,’ he said.
He also said they hope to achieve good results by helping students go through good Stress Management and also help them sustain good mental health (being psychologically and emotionally stable) as well as being physically fit. He concluded by saying he looks forward to GIMPA collaborating with other tertiary institutions counselling centres to organize programs like this, where everyone can socialize as well.
Dylan Afriyie was the lucky winner of the ultimate prize of a night’s stay at the African Regent Hotel.
