Finally the long awaited GIMPA Endowment was launched on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at the Greenhill Campus of GIMPA.
The historic event was attended by some distinguished personalities including heads of corporate entities, chiefs and alumni of the Institute, who had all come to support this worthy course.
The GIMPA Endowment is a perpetuity fund for intergenerational support to both qualified students, faculty and staff of GIMPA.
The target is one billion Ghana Cedis, of which GIMPA had committed an annual contribution of one million Ghana Cedis, toward the principal. It is hoped that the Institute will contribute more with time.
The Endowment is backed by a policy, which provides the framework for operating the fund. The Endowment policy was read out in its entirety by the Secretary of the Institute, Mr. Julius Atikpui on behalf of Dr. Janet Ampadu Fofie, a member of the GIMPA Governing Council.
It was launched by Piesie Kofi Darko Asante, the Chair of the Governing Council of GIMPA.
The objective of the Endowment is to support needy but intelligent students, support activities that seek to improve the quality of undergraduate and graduate education through programmes such as international engagements, student exchanges, global student competitions, and to also offer support to research and innovation.
It is also established to support faculty development and research through the establishment of Endowed Research Chairs in areas of intellectual importance to GIMPA. It will also establish a programme for students to engage in global and community activities that have industry, social and cultural implications for national development.
Indeed, as a centre of excellence in tertiary education, the goal is to be able to give back to society by making it possible for brilliant students, who would have otherwise not been able to gain tertiary education, gain the opportunity to do so.
Launching the Endowment Piesie Darko Asante said donations to it could also be in the form of bequests. He further assured donors of the many arrangements put in place to ensure that the Endowment is protected from indiscriminate spending.
In his address, the Rector of GIMPA, Prof. Samuel Kwaku Bonsu emotionally recounted how he had struggled financially as a student many years ago and was therefore, together with his family, committing an amount of one hundred thousand Ghana cedis to the Endowment as a scholarship for brilliant students in honour of his parents. It would be known as the ‘Bonsu Pokua Scholarship Fund’.
Prof. Bonsu said the Endowment was intended as a perpetual source of support for GIMPA and its mandate to provide capacity buildings for Ghana’s development.
‘To ensure that not only the present generation but future generations also benefit from the fund, only a fraction of its value each year will be spent,’ he indicated.
He therefore, urged governments, corporate entities, alumni, students, staff, individuals, parents, and friends of GIMPA, to contribute generously either in cash or in kind toward this worthwhile venture.
Some corporate bodies, chiefs, alumni and individuals present made contributions of various amounts to support the Endowment. GIMPA is still counting on the support of others to help make this dream of helping needy but brilliant students acquire free education become a reality.
